Russia launched one of its largest attacks on Kyiv in weeks, unleashing a massive overnight barrage of missiles and drones that struck multiple locations across the Ukrainian capital and other regions of the country. Ukrainian officials described the assault as a major escalation and said the attack caused civilian casualties, infrastructure damage, and fires at several historic and residential sites.
According to Ukrainian authorities, Russia launched approximately 70 missiles and more than 600 drones during the attack, with Kyiv identified as the primary target. Ukrainian air defense forces reported intercepting the majority of incoming weapons, but several missiles and drones penetrated defenses and struck locations throughout the city.
Among the most symbolic incidents was a fire at the historic Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, one of Ukraine's most important religious and cultural landmarks. The Dormition Cathedral within the monastery complex caught fire during the attack, prompting outrage from Ukrainian officials and religious leaders.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes as an attack not only on Ukraine but also on global cultural and religious heritage. He called on Western allies to increase military assistance, particularly air-defense systems capable of intercepting ballistic and hypersonic missiles.
The attack caused extensive damage across Kyiv. Residential buildings, power infrastructure, cultural institutions, and commercial properties were affected. Emergency crews spent hours battling fires and searching damaged structures for survivors. Thousands of residents sought shelter in subway stations and underground facilities as air raid sirens echoed throughout the night.
Casualty figures remain fluid as rescue operations continue. Reports indicate multiple deaths and injuries in Kyiv and other cities targeted during the attack, including Kharkiv and Dnipro. Officials warned that the toll could rise as emergency workers continue clearing debris and searching damaged buildings.
Russia, meanwhile, denied responsibility for damage to the monastery and claimed that a U.S.-supplied Patriot air-defense missile caused the fire. Moscow insists its strikes were directed at military facilities and defense-related infrastructure rather than civilian targets. Ukrainian officials strongly reject that explanation and maintain that Russian weapons caused the destruction.
The attack comes amid an increasingly intense phase of the war, with both sides carrying out deep strikes far behind front lines. Ukraine has recently expanded drone attacks against Russian military facilities, fuel depots, and industrial infrastructure, while Russia has increased the scale and frequency of missile and drone assaults on Ukrainian cities.
Military analysts say the latest strike demonstrates Russia's continuing ability to launch large-scale coordinated attacks despite years of sanctions and battlefield losses. At the same time, Ukraine's interception rate shows the importance of Western-supplied air-defense systems, which officials say remain essential to protecting major population centers.
The assault comes just ahead of major international meetings where Ukraine is expected to seek additional military aid and financial support. Zelenskyy has urged allies to accelerate deliveries of missile-defense systems, warning that Russia is attempting to overwhelm Ukrainian defenses through sheer volume.
As the war enters another summer of heavy fighting, the attack on Kyiv serves as a reminder that despite diplomatic discussions and intermittent peace proposals, the conflict remains highly active and increasingly destructive. With both sides escalating long-range strikes and neither showing signs of backing down, hopes for a near-term settlement remain uncertain.
